As part of community outreach on the part of the "Mentors in Mentakab" (should we coin that phrase?), we work with many different social and charity groups in the Temerloh area. Temerloh mentors Jimmy Ma and Martina Gilmartin were at an event hosted by the Temerloh Hakka association with their friends Thomas James and Sarah Higgs from the Maran cluster.

The Hakka association is both a social and charitable group that brings together and celebrates the Chinese-Hakka ethnic culture, which many Chinese members of the community belong to. These dinners serve as a way to celebrate their culture and introduce others to their culture. An added bonus is that the proceeds from the dinner tickets goes towards causes such as education and welfare.

Martina's mentee, Mr. Veera at SK Bandar Mentakab, had yet another great language arts lesson with his Year 3 class this week. Firstly, he guided students in writing a short composition on a visit to the zoo, they then presented their compositions orally in class, after that he guided them in a dialogue activity where they spoke freely with their partners discussing different animals at the zoo. The class finished with a wonderful action song where the students wore their masks and we even had some great props to help the students situate themselves according to the lyrics (under the tree, behind the rock, behind the bush). Another great lesson by Mr. Veera!

Martina had a great class this past week with her mentee Mr Veera at SK Bandar Mentakab. He guided the students in a week-long series of lessons culminating with a fun-filled language arts lesson. The  students made masks of all the characters in their stories and used them together to create mini-presentations.

Jimmy encourages his teachers to incorporate art into their classes when possible. The students enjoy it and it is a fun class that yields something productive. Classes incorporating art can be used to show comprehension in a different way. The artwork that the students produce can then be displayed around the class.

Here, Jimmy is helping his mentee: Ms. Afzan conduct a class using art. The students are drawing clothes on stick figures. This was a year 1 class in SK Bangau in the Temerloh district.

Jimmy conducted a fun review lesson of foods and colors with a year 1 class in his TELL2 SK Telok Sentang school with his teacher: Mohamad Hanif

Students were given plates and a worksheet of foods. They were asked what the foods were and to color in the foods. Then, the students cut out 4 foods from the worksheet and glued them to the plate. They then took turns saying simple sentences about the foods they had on their plates.

The students were encouraged to color their foods any color they wanted so that they could exercise their color vocabulary.

PAL - Reading

Jimmy Ma did a PAL-Reading class in his SK Bangau class with his mentor: Suhana. Students were very happy and willing to take turns reading to each other. Many groups went through 2 or 3 books during the class.

It sure didn't hurt that the class was in the air-conditioned library after a hot Physical Education class either!

The Temerloh district held its Poetry Recitation and Choral Speaking contests on August 12, 2014. The contest was held in Martina Gilmartin's TELL2 SJKC Mentakab 1 school.

Temerloh TELL2 mentors Jimmy Ma and Martina Gilmartin were in attendance supporting their schools.

Jimmy Ma helped his schools participate in this competition by writing the poems for three of his participating schools. He also helped with one school in their choral speaking practices.

Martina Gilmartin helped her school extensively in their choral speaking practice, spending every Wednesday afternoon practicing with the choral speaking team.

The Temerloh cluster held their last TPD of the year on August 11, 2014. At the request of the Temerloh PPD, the mentors in Temerloh combined their TELL2 teachers with teachers from every school in the district in order to present a workshop directed at speaking activities for both teachers and students.

This event was held at Jimmy's TELL2 SJKC Khee Chee school in Temerloh and had 80+ teachers in attendance from every school in the Temerloh-Mentakab-Lanchang district.
